The History

Ryka is a brand "By Women, For Women," and they design every shoe from scratch to fit the unique way a woman’s foot is built. Ryka was born in 1987 when its founder, Sheri Poe, realized that most athletic shoes were just smaller, narrower versions of men’s sneakers. After suffering a back injury caused by poorly fitting shoes during aerobics, she decided to create the first brand designed exclusively for women's feet.

For over 30 years, Ryka has studied the unique way women move, focusing on the "Q Angle" (the angle from the hip to the knee) and the fact that women typically have a narrower heel and a wider forefoot. Today, they remain the only major athletic brand that builds every single shoe from the ground up specifically for a woman’s anatomy, ensuring a perfect fit without the need for a "break-in" period.

What Makes Ryka Different?

Most athletic shoes are designed based on a man’s foot shape. Ryka changed that by focusing on two major differences in a woman’s foot:

• The Shape: Women typically have a narrower heel and a wider forefoot. Ryka shoes are built to lock your heel in place so it doesn't slip, while giving your toes plenty of room to spread out.

• The "Q Angle": Because women have wider hips, the angle from the hip to the knee (the Q Angle) is different. Ryka builds their midsoles to support this alignment, which helps prevent knee and hip pain during long walks.

• Weight Distribution: They use softer cushioning that is specifically tuned for a woman’s body weight, making them feel "broken in" and comfortable right out of the box.
